Crowns, Bridges and Veneers
A crown is an artificial cap over the top part of the tooth. It can act like a "helmet" which covers and protects the remnants of the tooth. If the nerve of the tooth was considered "the brain", the role of the crown can be visualised as a helmet to brace, protect and absorb impact.
BOH Dental offers three types of crowns: high quality all ceramic crowns; all metal crowns using high gold content alloys or porcelain fused to metal (PFM) restorations.
At BOH, we provide our patients with crowns created in an onsite laboratory Studio 12. The focus at Studio 12 is on constructing high quality crowns. This is achieved due to the highly experienced laboratory technicians using the optimum combination of high quality materials and finishing all work under a microscope.
BOH crowns are quality controlled in the Studio 12 laboratory to ensure that the fit of the crown is to a miminal tolerance. Highly trained technicians' attention to detail in the impression making process and a focus on accurate dies and model systems achieves this superior quality crowned tooth.
Due to the high quality of the internal fit and the adherence to strict design principles in the reshaping of the tooth, BOH crowns are "over engineered" and will tolerate many years of service. The average life of crowns from international studies is between 10 12 years. However, many crowns made by Studio 12 and placed by a BOH dentist last many more years.
At BOH and Studio 12 the advantage of colour corrected lighting, digital photography and individual shade making, in addition to custom recording of each patient's tooth shades ensures a superior aesthetic outcome.
Apart from technical excellence, patients can feel secure in the knowledge that a crown placed by a BOH dentist is made locally by locally trained technicians in the aesthetics of BOH Dental.
A bridge replaces missing or lost teeth by suspending a false tooth from the natural teeth either side of the space. Crowns are made to fit on the natural teeth adjacent to the space and are joined by a solid crown in the middle.
A bridge is a permanent restoration which can only be removed by a dentist. Therefore, it offers comfort and confidence whilst smiling, talking and eating all types of food.
These are a very thin facia made from porcelain. They are bonded to the front of your teeth and can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth and smile.
Each porcelain veneer is individually made to suit your desired aesthetic result, allowing it to be indistinguishable from real teeth. Veneers are excellent for treating chipped, discoloured, slightly malaligned or misshapen teeth, or gaps between the front teeth.
To prepare each tooth your dentist will remove a thin layer (about 1mm) from the enamel surface of the tooth. An impression is then taken of your teeth and given to the dental ceramist, who constructs the veneers. At your next appointment the veneers can be cemented onto your teeth.
Plaque is the major cause of tooth decay and gum disease. All crowns and bridges must be brushed and flossed daily to ensure all the plaque is removed. Teeth that have been restored or replaced by crowns and bridges do require extra care to remove all the plaque.
At BOH your dentist will show you any special instruments you may require and how to use them. It is also necessary for your dentist to regularly examine your mouth and your hygienist or dentist to professionally clean your teeth, ensuring continued oral health and comfort throughout life.
